7 Problems with Blogging And How to Overcome Them

Blogging can be exciting and very rewarding, but it does come with its own set of problems, we will look at how to overcome the most popular problems bloggers face.

Deciding to start a blog is a huge commitment.  It will have its joys as well as difficulties.  It is not always easy and to think that you will not run into problems is deceiving yourself.

Some of the common problems with blogging are listed below, with some suggestions on overcoming these problems.

So, let’s have a  look at the most common problems with blogging & how to overcome them.

Following Too Many Blogging Gurus

The chance of you being interested in starting your own blog is likely because you either watched some on YouTube or read an article about blogging.  There are so many people online who claim to know it all but in reality, all they are doing is selling you their product.

Beware not to fall into this trap.  I‘m not trying to sell you my product nor am I promoting someone else’s product so I can get a commission.

My aim in this article is to share with you what I have learned over the years I have been blogging.

One major mistake I made at the start was following too many blogging gurus.  Instead of finding them helpful, I found them to be confusing because they did not agree on many areas such as

  • If backlinking was considered good or bad,
  • To use or not to use keyword research tools,
  • Best hosting for blogging etc.

My advice is, if you want to rank your articles on Google then you listen to Google.

There is nothing wrong with following blogging gurus just don’t follow too many.  I recommend choosing 1 or 2 who you find most helpful.

Not Getting Traffic To Your Blog

One of the most discouraging things that can happen as a new blogger is getting no traffic to your articles.

After spending so much time researching and writing articles and to find out no one is actually reading them can impact your motivation to continue blogging.

When you first start blogging, you don’t realize how long it takes for a new website to have its articles rank on Google.

Some people think when you write an article it will be seen in Google search straight away, this can’t be further away from the truth.

Before Google can send you traffic to your brand new website, it needs to build trust with your website.  Google calls this EAT (Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) process.  Moz (www.moz.com/blog/google-e-a-t) has written a good article explaining how you can create content that keeps Google happy.

Once you have written articles that are good in Google’s eyes it then can take up to 8 months or even more in some circumstances for your articles to start ranking.  This is why blogging is considered a long-term process and not an overnight get-rich-quick scheme.

Time Management

One of the most common problems when it comes to blogging is learning how to manage your time.  This was my main problem in the beginning.  It is so easy to become distracted by something which can cause you not to write at all.

To create a successful blog, you need to put in the work.  You need to remember that it will not always be easy, and it takes self-discipline.  Managing your time is so important.

One of the ways to overcome this problem of time management is to make a schedule and stick to it.

Having a daily schedule that organizes your time will help to keep you on track.  I found that having a schedule in front of me with the times that I will be working as well as when I will have a break makes it easier to keep going.

Keeping a notepad nearby will also help when you think of other ideas while working.  You can quickly jot down your ideas and thoughts without completely stopping what you have been working on.  You can go through the ideas at the end of the workday.

Lack Of Focus

Blogging can become lonely at times and you can easily lose your focus.  Like anything in life, if you lose your focus you start making mistakes.

One reason you can easily focus as a blogger is your surroundings.  As a blogger working from home, you are in your comfort zone which means your focus can easily get distracted by what’s going on around you such as

  • Family needs,
  • Phone calls,
  • Visitors etc.

If you think about it, if you worked for an employer you would not be allowed to use your phone or have your family around while you work.

So we just need to set some ground rules when we work from home.

Working from home can have a positive and negative effect on your work.  Positive because you can spend more time with family while earning money by blogging and negative because more distractions can cause you to lose your focus.

I find keeping the spare room as my work area helps a lot.  This way I have the peace to work plus I know that the family is next door.

Having a separate room for you to work in helps with your focus without all the distractions.  But not everyone has a spare room for blogging in.  In this case, I suggest that you look at the times when it’s going to be quiet for you to work, such as when the kids are at school or outside playing.

Losing Your Motivation As A Blogger

Another problem that arises when it comes to blogging is losing motivation.  This can happen when it seems like things are moving too slow, or it takes to long writing articles.

Remaining motivated is a must to keep your blog articles coming.

Overcoming the problem of losing motivation is important because once you have lost motivation it is difficult to get it back.

One of the things that can help is to not make unrealistic goals.  If you know it takes you a couple of days to write an article, don’t expect yourself to do an article a day.  Break some of the bigger tasks you need to complete into smaller tasks.

Remember to reward yourself for the accomplishments you have already made.  You need to also remember that a successful blog takes time, and everything will not be completed in one day.

Get into the habit of writing every day.  Once your article is done walk away from it for a few hours or even a day and then go back and edit it.

And remember to give yourself grace.  There will be good days and a lot of articles written.  There will also be those days that you did not get much done despite working all day.  There will be days when you struggle.

Remind yourself that you are making progress.

Finding Topics To Write About

Another problem when it comes to blogging is finding topics to write articles about.  The goal is to reach the audience you are targeting.  The topic cannot be too broad and must be relevant to your niche.

One of the ways to overcome this problem is to begin by making a list of ideas.  Then go and research your topic.  Think of the questions that you would ask, or are related to your niche.  You will be surprised how many topic ideas will pop out when you start researching.

Think about your audience.  What questions are they asking and can you answer that question.  For instance, you cannot just write an article about shoes, that is too broad of a topic.  What are the questions that people ask regarding shoes?  What is the best type of shoes for hiking is something that will narrow down the topic.

So, my advice is to write a list of ideas.  This doesn’t necessarily need to be narrowed down right now.  After you make your list read it again.  Think of questions that arise after reading this list.  Then go and research some of your ideas, look at what Google brings up.

Remember the point of blog articles is to answer questions and give information to your readers. What are your readers looking for is the question that should always be in the back of your mind.

What are the readers looking for?

Setting Up A Blog Correctly

One of the biggest difficulties new bloggers face is setting up their website correctly.  It is not easy if this is all new to you.

You need to think about many factors such as:

  • Domains,
  • Hostings,
  • How to choose a niche for your blog etc.

As you can see there is a lot that goes into setting up a blog.  Overcoming this problem is only done through educating yourself.  The articles below will help you start and set up your blog and more.  More articles will be added to the list below soon.

Final Thoughts

Running your blog can be so much fun and very rewarding but it does come with its own challenges.

If you are struggling you are not alone, we have all been there when we first started.

The best advice I was ever given when I first started was ‘never give up, keep publishing articles and keep learning from your mistakes and other people’s mistakes.

This is the reason I write about blogging so I can share what I have learned over the years and even share the mistakes that I have made so you won’t repeat them.

I hope this article on 7 problems with blogging & how to overcome them has been helpful.

Please share in the comments any other problems that you might have faced as a new blogger and what you did to overcome them.

Happy Blogging!
